Lightweight flywheels have always been used to allow the horsepower that an engine creates to be used more efficiently thus increasing the performance of the engine. Because the standard flywheel is so heavy it can take as much as 40bhp to rotate it from 1000 to 6000rpm, by using a light weight aluminium flywheel this can be reduced to less than 15bhp.
When replacing a twin mass flywheel with a solid aluminium item the standard rigid drive plate must be replaced with a sprung centre drive to ensure a smooth take up of the clutch system.
