Timing Chain Death Rattle Fix for MINI N12 Engines

Timing chain death rattle is an issue that can occur in the MINI N12 engine from 2006 - 2013.

A timing chain is an essential part of all combustion engines as it links all the moving parts together. If a vehicle does not have one or if the one it does have fails then it will be unable to perform the basic functions.

If a timing chain breaks or fails then it can cause what is known as a death rattle which refers to the spring-loaded timing chain tensioner failing or becomes less efficient and slackening the timing chain which can hit the timing chain guide rails and as a result can lead to damage to these guides.

The symptoms that your timing chain might be stretched or damaged include:- Engine misfire, metal shavings found in your oil or a rattling engine. If any of these occur then we recommend getting your timing chain replaced sooner rather than later as they can all lead to catastrophic engine failure.
