They are an inexpensive way to improve braking and work well with EBC brake discs too although not a necessity. If you attend or are planning to attend track days then uprating your pads to EBC Redstuff will suit you best - these pads work at higher temperatures and are less likely to fade under heavy braking. A set includes 4 pads which will cover a single axle. The rear pads are suitable for the standard rear brake setup, not JCW.
