The Mahle forged piston is ideal for those looking to add strength to a tuned engine or needing to re-build with an oversized piston. The Mahle piston for the MINI R56 N14 Cooper S are high quality and part of Mahle PowerPak piston range. Pin bores are CNC machined for precision and all pistons are hand de-burred.

A phosphate coating has been applied over the pistons surface which acts to reduce friction with pins and bore, this is common practice for forged pistons and is applied to reduce the occurance of micro welding. In addition to the phosphate Mahle apply a Grafal coating on the piston skirt to further reduction drag (friction) and wear on the piston and bore. The Grafal coating is designed to last 100,000+ miles.

Why forged pistons?
Pistons tend to be cast or forged. A forged piston is usually stronger and lighter than a cast piston.
Forging allows a finer microstucture to be developed over the casting process which produces a structure that stronger consquently allowing less material to be used and reducing weight. The Mahle piston is made from a M142 alloy, a composition of aluminium,silicon, copper, magnesium and nickel, to produce a piston that is light weight, strong and with excellent thermal stability properties.
